Imation launches tape health check for LTO libraries
- Tape still being used for 65 percent of backup and 48 percent of archiving
- Long term studies indicate properly stored data storage tape has a longevity exceeding 30 yrs.
Hoofddorp, the Netherlands, August 25, 2009 – Imation has introduced Secure Scan, a new diagnose system to asses the quality of LTO libraries. The system is the newest addition to its DataGuard Data Protection program. Secure Scan system assesses the quality of tape cartridges for potential errors before they cause data loss. To ensure complete safety Secure Scan is the first scanning product that includes a digital locking mechanism. The media owner can rest assured on-site and in-transit knowing your media cannot be accessed by any LTO drive.
Anna Lidén, product manager magnetic and commercial storage at Imation Europe: “Six decades of experience in tape show all stored LTO cartridges need to be checked frequently. Long term studies done in the 80's indicate that data storage tape, when properly stored, has a longevity exceeding 30 years. Regular diagnosis will assess the health of your entire LTO library, searching for potential errors before they cause valuable data loss”.
Secure Scan works with an algorithm that reduces the risk of false negatives or positives. An integral barcode reader enables cartridge scans in or out of poly storage cases, providing immediate feedback on the viability of individual cartridges. The product helps user to monitor media subsets or entire libraries with easy-to-use statistical graphics and reports;
If a possible error is discovered, Imation Secure Scan will determine the root cause, drive or media. The user this way can opt to replace only the equipment necessary and save costs compared to the old method of discarding the entire lot;
The ’phone-home’ feature allows users to submit scan information directly to Imation for a more in-depth analysis and comparison against industry trends.
About Imation’s DataGuard Data Protection program
This introduction is the latest innovation in Imation’s DataGuard Data Protection program for tape storage. It offers various solutions to secure, manage, track and trace tape media in and between data center or storage sites in a safe and efficient manner. Imation Secure Scan comes to compliment the DataGuard RFid Tracking and Tracing (RFid based Tracking and Tracing of tape media) already available.
About LTO technology
LTO technology offers a cost-efficient way for businesses to store ever-expanding data. Whether the tapes are used for long-term archival or for regular backup of active data, the new method offers high energy savings and great advantages for cost per gigabyte. The energy savings of tape versus hard drives are still 290:1. Imation recently announced an important milestone in the storage industry: the achievement of multiple terabytes of native capacity on a single MP tape cartridge. Imation LTO-5 tape cartridges offer 3.2 TB of compressed storage and data transfer rates of up to 360MB/second and offer significant improvements over prior tape generations.
