Imation Starts Shipping World’s First Multi-Terabyte Magnetic Tape
Next generation of tape equipped with a nearly doubled storage capacity
Amsterdam, March 23rd 2010 - Imation announces that it starts shipping its LTO Ultrium Generation 5 tape cartridges. The new Imation LTO Ultrium Generation 5 format is equipped with a nearly doubled storage capacity and offers 1.5 terabytes and 3.0 terabytes of compressed storage.
Other significant improvements over prior LTO tape generations include increased data transfer rates, and a new partitioning functionality over the prior tape generation.
Imation LTO-5 tape cartridges specifications:
1. Native capacity of 1.5 terabytes and 3.0 terabytes of compressed storage
2. Data transfer rates of up to 280 MB/second compressed
3. New partitioning functionality to enhance file control and space management.
4. Drive level hardware-based writing of encrypted data to the tape cartridge. This feature helps to protect the storage and transport of sensitive information, as well as to address compliance objectives with WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) functionality.
5. Designed with backwards-compatible read-and-write capability with the Ultrium format generation 4 cartridges, and backward read capabilities with generation 3 cartridges, helping to protect investments and ease implementation.
Imation-manufactured LTO Ultrium generation 5 tape cartridges have superior media and cartridge construction, including:
• Imation proprietary TeraAngstrom™ technology – Allows tape to have a significantly smoother surface and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), delivering fewer errors and faster transfer rates.
• Imation advanced servo-writing technology – Ensures precise alignment between drive head and data tracks for greater reliability.
• Imation patented corner snap - Improves cartridge strength and protects data during shipping or mishandling.
• Imation patented three-piece tape spool - Distributes stress more evenly over the tape surface for better performance and longer archival life.
Moreover, the LTO 5 tape has been certified by the Measurement Analysis Corporation (MAC), an independent testing board for compliance verification testing, and the LTO Technology Provider Companies: HP, IBM Corporation and Quantum Corp. In the middle of last year, Imation announced that it was the first company to obtain the license to develop and manufacture this new multi-terabyte LTO 5 tape.
