In the world of
DVD burners, purchasing a drive new doesn't necessarily mean it is fully
optimized to provide you with the best and most complete burning experience.
The firmware, meaning the software built into the drive's flash memory
which acts as the control center for a drive's operation, is subject
to updates. The firmware determines the best parameters for the speed
of media you are using, and then continually monitors the burn process
to ensure the quality of the burn.

What is firmware?
Firmware is the programming embedded in your DVD burner that controls its writing
strategy. Among other things, it validates that you are using the correct media
type in the drive, and will cause the drive to reject incorrect media.
Firmware plays the middleman between the drive's software and hardware. The most recent firmware updates will result in the best possible recording results for your drive.
How do I check my burner type & firmware version?
Burning software will usually provide this information. For example,
if you are using Nero 6.0 software, simply select 'Recorder' and then
'Choose Recorder.' A window with the list of your drives will appear,
providing all the information you need.
Alternatively, you can download CD-DVD-Speed on www.cdspeed2000.com. This program will provide you with the list of your drives with installed firmware versions.
How often should I update my drive's firmware?
We suggest checking your drive manufacturer's Web site every two or
three months, or whenever a problem crops up. Depending upon the vendor,
downloadable firmware upgrades may appear as often as every month,
or as infrequently as once in a drive's lifetime.
Where do I find firmware updates?
Firmware updates are usually found free-of-charge on the drive manufactuer
Website. If no update is available for your drive, you should contact
the manufacturer for help.
Please follow the instructions given by your drive manufacturer. If your drive was bundled in a computer, please refer to the support organization of your PC supplier.
