High End PCs | Harsh Environments | Kiosks & Custom Systems | Storage Arrays (RAID)
Why SSD?
A kiosk or similar custom system provides a unique set of challenges because it is typically housed in a sealed enclosure and is often found in high-traffic areas. Because mini enclosures are often required, heat-related failure is a real possibility. And because they are in public settings, many applications require silent operation. In addition, since many of these systems are mobile, they need to be able to withstand extra shocks and vibrations.
Hard disk drives (HDD), which are relatively fragile and require a fan for cooling, are often less than ideal. And because kiosks are usually deployed outside of office settings, it can be very expensive to perform maintenance.
An Imation Solid State Drive (SSD) powered by Mtron emits less heat than an HDD, is more durable -- handling an impact up to 1500G, and has a much higher mean time between failure (MTBF) rating. Also, if power is interrupted, Imation SSDs typically reboot in half the time of an HDD.**
