Top 10 Tips for Media Care & Handling

  1. Use labels specified for magnetic tape, and place only in designated label areas.

  2. Inspect cartridges prior to use for damage, leaderblock or leader pin not seated, and write protect status. Do not attempt to pull tape out of the cartridge.

  3. Use proper shipping practices inside and outside of data center. Containers should include shock absorption and protect the cartridges against debris, excessive humidity/moisture, etc.

  4. Do not expose cartridges to extreme environmental conditions. Refer to Imation’s website for specific temperature and humidity conditions by product.

  5. Do not touch the tape surface.

  6. Acclimate cartridges to their usage environment for at least 24 hours before using in the library.

  7. Assure that cartridges are not exposed to dust and debris in any environment. Airborne debris can cause media errors.

  8. Do not degauss servo-written media, and do not expose media to high magnetic fields.

  9. Assure that drives and automation are working per manufacturer's specifications.

  10. Use cleaner cartridges as specified by hardware manufacturer. Note: Different tape technologies have different requirements for cleaning.
