Which peripherals can I monitor?

StorSentry™ recognizes 9940, 9840, T10000, IBM 3590, 3592, LTO, DLT, and SDLT tape drives using Imation media.

Does StorSentry™ operate on UNIX machines?

StorSentry™ supports the Windows 2000 or XP & UNIX platforms.

What do I need to install on my server to run StorSentry?

All the software components required by StorSentry™ are included in the installation pack. StorSentry requires a SQL database and environment.

Where should StorSentry be installed?

StorSentry™ is installed on the backup server to which the media to monitor are attached.

Do I need to interrupt my backup to obtain quality-related information on my media resources?

No, StorSentry™ is not a tester; this separate tool runs in parallel to the backup applications. It collects a certain amount of data available within the drive during the backup process.

Does the StorSentry system impact backup performance?

No, StorSentry™ runs in an unobtrusive manner in the backup environment. The StorSentry collection agent regularly scans the SCSI or fibre chain on which the peripheral devices are connected. This scanning frequency is set by default so as not to impact the data throughput between the backup server and the attached peripherals in the majority of configurations.

Does the size of the database generated by StorSentry risk saturating my hard disk space?

No. An infrastructure with, for example, 10 drives and 300 media would generate, over a year, a database with a size of 96 MB for 20 mounts per day.
